Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barret,

I hope you're well. I am writing this letter regarding the advertisement that I saw in the newspaper yesterday, in which you mentioned that you need an assistance in your household chores. I am a certified landscaper who deals with local customers by rendering the cleaning amenities on a weekly basis. On top of that, I am also providing a laundry service at my home, which helps to do avoid your cloth washing concerns.

I have been doing this for the last five years. I believe this help would be beneficial for you to avoid the hefty amount of fine given by the city council. Moreover, I have professional tools and trained employees to serve the door to door services.

Although I worked from Monday to Friday, only not available on weekends. I am not an argumentative person who disturbs your neighbour while working on weekends. Please let me know if you're interested, I would be grateful to book an appointment for the furthest process.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Gurdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt, which is excellent. You clearly stated how you could help (landscaping and laundry), why you want the work, and your availability. However, the content is slightly mismatched for the context of a private home. Mentioning 'hefty fines from the city council' and 'trained employees' sounds more like a commercial business pitch than a personal letter to a homeowner. To improve, ensure your ideas are tailored specifically to the persona of a helpful individual rather than a corporate service provider. The tone is generally appropriate, but the relevance of some details could be refined to better fit the scenario.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On top of that,' 'Moreover,' and 'Although,' which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'the furthest process,' which is unclear in this context. The referencing is generally clear, and the overall structure follows the standard conventions of a formal letter. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the logical progression between sentences is smoother and more natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'landscaper,' 'rendering,' and 'amenities.' However, there are several instances of unnatural word choice or collocation. For example, 'rendering the cleaning amenities' is not standard English; 'providing cleaning services' would be more natural. Similarly, 'do avoid your cloth washing concerns' is awkward. While your meaning is clear, the vocabulary lacks the precision and natural collocation expected at higher levels. Focusing on learning common collocations for household tasks and professional services would significantly enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the 'Although' clause in the final paragraph. There are several grammatical errors, including 'I am writing this letter regarding the advertisement that I saw,' 'need an assistance' (should be 'need assistance'), and 'only not available on weekends' (missing subject). Additionally, 'I would be grateful to book an appointment for the furthest process' is grammatically confusing. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence completeness will help improve your score.
