Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my interest in helping you at your home for a few hours next summer.
Actually, I will help you in a different activities like I will prepare meals for your family because I have good culinary skills. Also, I will assist you to keep your home tidy and organised, water the plants and remove the weeds in the garden.
I would like to do this sort of work in order to do something meaningful in next summer vacation rather than spending time on social media. Moreover, this work opportunity will allow me to learn basic grammar and English vocabulary during your spare time in order to improve my English fluency. Sometimes work with other people develop good communication, cooperation and teamwork skills, which would be helpful for me in the future.
Regarding my availability, I will help you from Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 4 PM, however, I will be unable to assist you on weekends and public holidays.
It would be appreciated if you accept my request and allow me to help you in the next summer. I look forward to your positive response in this matter.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Twinkle

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly outline the tasks you can perform, such as meal preparation and gardening, explain your motivation for wanting the job, and provide specific availability details. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your intentions and constraints. To reach a higher band, ensure that your reasons for wanting the work are more personal or professional, rather than focusing on learning English, which might seem slightly unusual for a home-help position.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each requirement, and a polite closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics. You use cohesive devices such as 'Actually', 'Also', 'Moreover', and 'Regarding my availability' to guide the reader through your points. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'culinary skills', 'organised', 'cooperation', and 'consideration'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'I will help you in a different activities' (should be 'in different activities') and 'Sometimes work with other people develop' (should be 'Working with other people develops'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of more advanced, less common lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show control over basic grammar, but there are recurring errors that slightly impact the fluency. For example, 'in different activities' instead of 'with different activities', and the subject-verb agreement error in 'Sometimes work with other people develop'. Additionally, 'in next summer vacation' should be 'during the next summer vacation'. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally accurate. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement would improve your score.
