Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope this letter finds you in a radiant health. I am writing this letter as a response of the advertise you posted. I am interested to help you around the house.

I am brilient at household chores and even gardening. Additionally, I used to have a pet so I can take care if there is a cat or dog in the house. I work in the morning shifts due to which I have spare time in the evenings. By giving you a helping hand I will utilise the after work time and can earn some extra money. My availability is from monday to thursday 4pm to 7pm and on sturdays 3pm to 6pm. Though if the given time does not work for you then we can negotiate about it. And just to inform you that I have helped people before in household so that I will also provide you with the references.

Hope to hear from you and thank you in advance.

Yours Sincerly,

Pam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined how you can help (chores, gardening, pet care), explained your motivation (earning extra money), and provided specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on why you are particularly suited for this work, perhaps by mentioning your reliability or specific experience, which would make your application more persuasive. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to your skills, availability, and finally a call to action. Paragraphing is used, though the body of the letter could be more clearly divided into distinct paragraphs for each bullet point to improve readability. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'Though', which help the flow. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph focuses on a single theme would enhance the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly, such as 'household chores', 'utilise', and 'negotiate'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'brilient' (brilliant), 'sincerly' (sincerely), and 'monday' (Monday), which should be capitalized. Additionally, 'radiant health' is slightly unnatural in this context; 'good health' would be more standard. To improve, focus on proofreading for spelling and using more precise collocations. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'response of the advertise' (should be 'response to the advertisement') and 'I am interested to help' (should be 'interested in helping'). There are also minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lack of capitalization for days of the week. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
