Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I am writing this email to discuss that you are looking for a helper who can aid you with household chores.

Firstly, I would like to inform you that I can assist you with making food, and I can also do other kinds of things, such as taking care of your children and completing their homework and laundry.

In addition, I would love to do this job because I have to pay my bills, and I also recently moved from another town, so right now I do not have a job.

Finally, I have my family with me; if possible, I would not be able to come every day, but I can come on weekdays, and I need to be off on weekends because I have to spend quality time with my younger ones. I would like to request that you please give me one chance to prove myself.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind Regards,

Smith.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a potential employer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, when mentioning why you want the job, you focus solely on financial necessity. Expanding slightly on your relevant experience or enthusiasm for the role would have made the letter more persuasive. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader understands exactly what you are offering and when you are available, which satisfies the requirements for this task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'Finally' to transition between ideas. While these are effective, the flow is occasionally a bit mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences is smoother, rather than relying on a list-like structure. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of information is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your points clearly. Phrases like 'household chores', 'quality time', and 'prove myself' are used correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks variety. For example, you use the word 'do' or 'doing' multiple times (e.g., 'do other kinds of things', 'do this job'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise verbs and descriptive adjectives. There are no spelling errors, and your word choice is generally accurate, which ensures that your meaning is never obscured for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical issues, such as the phrasing 'discuss that you are looking for', which is slightly unnatural; 'inquire about the position you advertised' would be better. The sentence 'if possible, I would not be able to come every day, but I can come on weekdays' is a bit contradictory in its construction. Despite these small errors, your grammar is generally controlled, and the meaning is always clear. You use punctuation correctly, and your sentence construction is sufficient for the task requirements.
