Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope all is well.
My name is Shivam ,and I am writing this letter to express my field of interest to apply for a position which you recently advertised in a local newspaper for housekeeper.
Just to let you know, I am an Indian immigrant who is looking for the job to survive in the market. The position I am applying for, I believe I would be the best fit for it.
The reason being is I am a good communicator. In addition, I can help you with small small house hold chores.
Furthermore, I am also familiar with local community and routes, so incase if you need me for any outside work, I would be able to help you. Also, I am available 40 hours a week which is equivalent to full time working hours.
I hope to hear positive from you.
Thank you and have a pleasant day.
Sincerely,
Shivam Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. However, the development of these points is quite thin. For instance, 'small small house hold chores' is vague and lacks detail. To improve, you should provide specific examples of the tasks you can perform, such as cleaning, gardening, or grocery shopping. Additionally, the tone is slightly inappropriate for a formal letter; mentioning that you are looking for a job 'to survive in the market' is unnecessary and detracts from a professional presentation. Expanding on your skills and providing a more professional rationale for wanting the position would significantly improve your score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure, beginning with an introduction, moving through the required points, and ending with a standard closing. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'Also' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is essentially one block of text. Breaking your response into distinct paragraphs for each bullet point would make the letter much easier to read and follow. Additionally, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Improving the flow between sentences would help move your score into the higher bands.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. You use some repetitive phrasing, such as 'small small', which is not standard English. There are also some minor collocation issues, such as 'express my field of interest to apply'. A more natural phrasing would be 'express my interest in applying'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to household assistance or professional correspondence. For example, instead of 'help', you could use 'assist' or 'provide support'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and professional verbs will demonstrate a stronger command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'I am writing this letter to express my field of interest to apply for a position which you recently advertised... for housekeeper' contains awkward phrasing and missing articles. You also have punctuation errors, such as the space before the comma in 'Shivam ,and'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
