Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I recently came across your advertisement regarding your need for help in your home for a few hours a day next summer, and I would like to offer my assistance.

To begin with, I could help you with a range of household tasks, such as cleaning, organizing, preparing meals, and running errands. Moreover, if you have a garden, I would happy to assist with watering plants and general upkeep. Additionally, if you need any administrative tasks done like sorting paperwork or managing appointments , I am comfortable with that as well.

I would like to take up this opportunity because I enjoy helping others, and I believe it would be a rewarding experience. Furthermore, I am looking for temporary work during the summer, and this role fits well with my schedule.

I will be available from June to August, every morning until early afternoon. However, I will be unavailable on weekends due to prior commitments. Please let me know if my availability aligns with your requirements.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Monika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outlined the types of assistance you can provide, such as cleaning and administrative tasks. You provided a logical reason for wanting the work, citing a desire to help others and a need for summer employment. Furthermore, your availability is clearly stated with specific timeframes and exclusions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a prospective employer, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. All parts of the task are well-developed and relevant.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'To begin with,' 'Moreover,' 'Additionally,' and 'Furthermore,' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the transition between the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion is smooth. The overall structure is coherent and supports the reader's understanding of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter. Phrases like 'came across your advertisement,' 'range of household tasks,' and 'prior commitments' are used accurately and naturally. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to reach the highest bands. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely, and there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The grammar is generally accurate, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used complex sentences effectively, such as 'I recently came across your advertisement... and I would like to offer my assistance.' Punctuation is mostly correct, although there is a minor spacing error before the comma in 'appointments ,'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over verb tenses and modal verbs is strong. The writing is clear and professional throughout.
