Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. I recently saw an advertisement about needing someone to help you at home next summer.

I am delighted to help you with the household chores. I am happy to do all the cleaning, washing clothes, doing dishes and anything you want. Moreover, I can also cook some Mexican dishes for you if you want.

Honestly, I am in need for the money to pay my university fees. Furthermore, I would prefer to help you rather than doing other jobs because I also help my mother with the work and I am familiar doing this type of work.

For the schedule, as there will be vacation during the summers, I am available for all days except Sundays. Therefore, you can tell me your preferrable time and I would love to join.

I hope I would be suitable for your preferences. Thank you for your time. I will be waiting for your response.

Yours faithfully,

Dhruvi Jasani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outline the household tasks you can perform, explain your motivation (financial need and relevant experience), and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your offer and your situation. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail about your experience with household chores to further persuade the reader of your suitability for the role.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the task. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that your transitions feel natural rather than mechanical; for instance, the transition to the schedule paragraph could be slightly more integrated with the previous content.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'household chores' and 'familiar doing this type of work' are accurate and appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'in need for the money' (should be 'in need of') and 'preferrable time' (spelled 'preferable'). To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise or sophisticated vocabulary, such as 'remuneration' instead of 'money' or 'flexibility' when discussing your schedule.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'I am familiar doing' (should be 'familiar with doing') and 'I hope I would be suitable' (should be 'I hope I am suitable'). Punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent verb tense usage and prepositional accuracy, as these small errors occasionally interrupt the flow of your writing.
