Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barett.

I hope you are doing well, I am writing this letter with regard to the advertisement you shared on social media, that I can help you with the home chores, that you mentioned, for next summer for few hours a day.

I can help you with cleaning the house, taking clothes for laundry, and any help you need I am happy to help, Also I am fluent in english so you can easily communicate with me.

I am a science student, studying in a nearby university, during my summer vacation I don't have any other plans to do, as I am looking for a part time then I seen your Advertisement and I thought to help you.

My vacation starts from May 1, I will be available everyday except may 12th on Sunday, because I have an dentist appointment on that day, so I wouldn't able to come.

If you want any clarification or information about me, you can ask at anytime.

Looking forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and detailing your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an acquaintance. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For example, when mentioning how you can help, you list 'cleaning' and 'laundry' but do not elaborate on your experience or efficiency. To improve, try to provide more specific details about your skills or why you are particularly suited to these tasks. The letter successfully covers the requirements, but the depth of information could be increased to better persuade the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Also' and 'If', but the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between your motivation and your availability could be smoother. There are some issues with punctuation, such as comma splices (e.g., 'I hope you are doing well, I am writing...'), which disrupt the flow. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence is clearly punctuated would help improve the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'advertisement', 'part-time', and 'clarification'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'taking clothes for laundry' (better: 'doing the laundry') and 'I seen your Advertisement' (should be 'I saw'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to household tasks or professional communication, and pay closer attention to verb tenses and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement and tense usage, such as 'I wouldn't able to come' (should be 'I wouldn't be able to come') and 'during my summer vacation I don't have any other plans to do' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas instead of full stops to separate independent clauses. Focusing on sentence boundaries and ensuring consistent verb forms will significantly improve your accuracy.
