Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

My name is Purvi Jain , an under graduate student saw your advertisement in a local newspaper that you need an assistance in your house for a period of time in the upcoming summer holidays. I am writing this letter to apply for the same position.

I am a hygiene friendly person. Thus, I know how to keep a home neat & tidy. I am efficient in cleaning floor mats, moping on wooden floor and dusting sofa-sets. In addition, I can take care of pets & children below eight years old if needed.

I have a summer break for three months which allows me a plenty of time to do an additional work . In addition, I will have an extra income for my pocket money.

Specifically, I can start my work as early as 8 in the morning and can be at your service till 2 in the afternoon everyday. Except this timings, I am not available as I have my other commitments towards my family & my younger siblings.

I hope this letter gives you all the basic answers to your questions to choose the best candidate who can help you in your daily chores. If you have any question, please feel free to reach out to me.

Thank you.

Your’s faithfully,

Purvi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly outlined how you could assist Mrs Barrett, explained your motivation for seeking the work, and provided specific availability details. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide more depth in your explanation of why you want the work; for example, instead of just mentioning 'pocket money,' you could explain how this experience would help you develop personal responsibility or gain valuable life skills. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You used some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'Thus' to link your sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between your skills and your availability could be more fluid to create a more natural flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'hygiene friendly' and 'daily chores' are relevant to the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'moping on wooden floor' (should be 'mopping wooden floors') and 'an additional work' (should be 'additional work'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from being considered highly precise. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'an assistance' (should be 'assistance'), 'a plenty of time' (should be 'plenty of time'), and 'Except this timings' (should be 'Outside of these hours'). Additionally, there is a punctuation error in the closing 'Your’s faithfully,' which should be 'Yours faithfully'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and plural forms.
