Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer.

Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Mrs. Barrett,

I am writing this letter to show my interest in the part-time job offer advertised in the local newspaper. I am aware that you are looking forward to getting support with household chores next summer.

As I have grown up in a middle-class family, I have been doing chores since childhood. I can help you with cooking, cleaning, and washing the dishes. Moreover, I can also bring you shopping and attend doctor's appointments as well. Additionally, if you would like to go out for a walk, I can accompany you.

I will have a summer vacation from school, so that will be the time I will invest in earning my tuition fees. As a result, I will need to work in a restaurant as a 'server.' Additionally, I will also be doing Uber to pay rent and bills. Although I would prefer to work at your place every day in the morning, necessary modifications can be made if you need any additional help.

I am really looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks,

Dimpal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a potential employer. However, the development of ideas is slightly inconsistent. While you list chores well, the explanation of your availability is somewhat confusing. You mention needing to work in a restaurant and doing Uber, which makes your actual availability for Mrs. Barrett unclear. To improve, ensure your schedule is presented more definitively so the reader knows exactly when you are free to help, rather than listing other competing commitments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'Additionally,' and 'As a result' to link your ideas. However, the transition between your motivation for the job and your other work commitments is a bit abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring that the logical flow between sentences is smoother, particularly when explaining how your other jobs might impact your availability for Mrs. Barrett.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your points effectively. Phrases like 'household chores,' 'tuition fees,' and 'necessary modifications' are used correctly. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the 'less common' or 'idiomatic' items that would push the score into the 8.0 range. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated synonyms for common verbs and nouns to show a greater degree of lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although I would prefer to work at your place every day...'. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are minor issues, such as 'doing Uber' (which is slightly informal; 'working as an Uber driver' would be more precise) and the slightly awkward phrasing 'looking forward to getting support' in the opening. Overall, your grammar is accurate enough that it never causes confusion for the reader. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help elevate this score.
