Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

While directing towards the market, I just saw the advertisement from your side. It is about to help a college girl, Lisa regarding her Mathematics test. If I do not forget, you are asking for next summer and juts a few hours.

I want to tell about my grip in the subject of Mathematics. I used to teach even in my college days. After the completion of my university studies, I did join a prestigious institution to take high grade classes. I have a complete grip on Algebra, Linear Equations. I do feel a real fun to solve the fractions. Moreover, factorization is also another important topic of Mathematics.

I would definitely love to help out Lisa to sort out the sums. As, basically I believe the subject is all about the clearance of concepts. If you do understand just one sum, the rest of the exercise would be no doubt on your finger tips.

It would be much feasible for me if you let it be on weekends. As on weekdays, I am afraid to be busy in some other tasks.

Kind Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt, which is excellent. You clearly explained how you can help (tutoring Mathematics), why you want to do it (your background and passion for the subject), and your availability (weekends). However, the task asks for someone to help 'in her home for a few hours a day'. Your response focuses exclusively on tutoring a girl named Lisa, which is a slight misinterpretation of the advertisement's general nature. While you successfully developed your ideas, ensure you read the prompt's context more carefully to align your response with the specific needs mentioned in the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'If you do understand', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'While directing towards the market'. Additionally, the connection between the opening paragraph and the rest of the letter could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which supports the reader's understanding of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'prestigious institution', 'factorization', and 'linear equations'. However, there are some instances of unnatural word choice or phrasing, such as 'juts a few hours' (typo), 'I do feel a real fun to solve', and 'on your finger tips' (which should be 'at your fingertips'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on more natural collocations and idiomatic expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies throughout the text. For example, 'While directing towards the market' is an awkward construction, and 'I did join a prestigious institution to take high grade classes' is slightly unnatural. You also have some minor errors in preposition use and article placement. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent, they occur frequently enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on sentence variety and proofreading for small errors will help improve this score.
