Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear MRrs Barrett,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to request you to consider me for the work that you advertised in the magzine.
Last evening, I saw an advertisement that you are looking for a person to help you in your household work. I would say that I am the good candidate for this position because I am doing my bachelor program in Nursing. As you mentioned in the post that you need a person who is good to look after your children and mother in law too. I can easily give a good care to both the generations. Besides, I am a fond of cooking so when you will be busy in other task I can also prepare a meal for your family.
However, I would love to do this job due to two reasons. Firstly, It is my semester break so I want to spend it by doing valuable task. Secondly, it is near my home so it would be convenient for me to reach at your place just by walk.
The most important thing I would like to share is the timing of my availability. I am not available from 7.30pm to 8.30pm on Saturday due to my personal task. Otherwise, I am available whole week except this time.
I would be grateful to you if you consider my request. Looking forward for your positive response.
Thank you
Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained how you could help (childcare, eldercare, and cooking), why you want the job (semester break and proximity), and your availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for instance, you mention your nursing studies, but you could briefly elaborate on how those specific skills would benefit Mrs. Barrett’s family. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'Besides' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is always clear. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition between your nursing studies and your cooking skills is a bit abrupt. Improving the use of cohesive devices would help the text move more smoothly from one point to the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'convenient,' 'advertisement,' and 'candidate.' There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'I am a fond of cooking' (should be 'I am fond of cooking') and 'give a good care' (should be 'provide good care'). While these errors do not impede communication, they show a need for more precise control over common English collocations. To improve, focus on learning natural word combinations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'I am the good candidate' (should be 'a good candidate'), 'in the magzine' (spelling error), and 'reach at your place just by walk' (should be 'reach your place on foot'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely cause confusion for the reader. Increasing your focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
