Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter in regarding the advertise in which you need someone to help you at your home for few hours a day next summer.
I can help you for a day next summer at your home since I noticed your home being painted by you alone. I can give you a hand for a day, that can make your work easier. I also have few ideas for your home since you are very fond of gardening. I love painting and decorating my home, since I did last summer. I can share some easy and quick tips for painting your home.
I am free on 09th and 10th May, that's first weekend of May in summer since the following weekend I would be visiting Paris along with my friend. Since you have visited Paris a while ago, we can talk over it while painting your home.
Looking forward to catching up.
Best wishes,
Saurabh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: suggesting help, explaining the motivation, and clarifying availability. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to help with painting is specific, but the explanation of why you would like to do the work is quite brief and lacks depth. While the tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbor, the content could be expanded to better demonstrate your suitability for the role. The response covers the requirements, but the ideas could be more fully developed to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the specific details of the offer and finally the availability. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive, with 'since' being used frequently to link ideas. Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between the different sections of the letter would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. You use some relevant terms such as 'gardening', 'decorating', and 'painting'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in regarding the advertise' (should be 'regarding the advertisement') and 'I did last summer' (which is vague). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on basic structures. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive language related to home maintenance and personal assistance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'I am writing this letter in regarding the advertise' (preposition and noun form errors), 'I can help you for a day' (which contradicts the prompt's request for 'a few hours a day'), and 'that's first weekend' (missing article). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and correct prepositional phrases will help improve your accuracy.
