Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barret,

I hope you are doing well.I saw your advertisement that you are looking for someone to help in your house for a few hours a day next summer. I am writting this letter to inform you that I am intrested in helping you in your home next summer.

I live independant in my house and do all the house chores by myself. I have some experience in plumbing and electrical work. I can help you with cleaning, plumbing, electrical work and other house chores. As you know that colleagues are closed in summer and due to extreme hot weather there are no outside activies available as well.

As summer break is starting from 1st June, I will be available from 5th June. One of my friend needs my help in his house for couple of days. I will finish his work and after that I can help you in your house.

I am looking forward to your response. Thank you for considering my request.

Your faithfully

Rizwan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state how you can help (cleaning, plumbing, electrical work), explain your motivation, and provide specific dates for your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation regarding why you want the work is limited to the fact that you are free during the summer. Expanding slightly on your interest in helping the community or gaining experience would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'As you know' and 'after that' to link sentences. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and phrases to improve the flow between sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which aids in the overall coherence of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'advertisement', 'experience', and 'considering'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'writting', 'intrested', and 'independant', which detract from the quality of the writing. Additionally, the phrase 'colleagues are closed' is an incorrect collocation; you likely meant 'colleges' or 'schools'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, the persistent spelling errors and occasional word-choice inaccuracies limit the score. Focusing on proofreading for common spelling mistakes will help improve your lexical score significantly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to inform you that I am interested...'. There are several grammatical errors, including 'I live independant' (should be 'independently'), 'no outside activies' (should be 'activities'), and 'One of my friend' (should be 'friends'). The closing 'Your faithfully' is also incorrect; it should be 'Yours faithfully'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement would help elevate your score in this criterion.
