Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer.
Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter
- suggest how you could help her in her home
- say why you would like to do this work
- explain when you will and will not be available
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Mrs. Barrett,
I am writting this letter to answer your advertisement for house help.
I can come to help you in household chores for example : kitchen help and tidy up the house.
I can do all the cookings as you know I am already working as a chef so I am well experienced in cookings and after that I would be able to tidy up the house as well as your kids always make mess in the house and its hard for you to do it again and again. But along that you would still have to guide me in starting days.
Apart from this I want to tell you about my availability as well
I would not be able come on weekdays as I am working full time so please tell me if I can come on weekends or sunday.
Hoping to hear from you soon.
Your faithfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. However, the tone is somewhat inappropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. For instance, the comment about the children making a 'mess' is overly blunt and could be perceived as rude. To improve, ensure your tone is consistently professional and polite. While the ideas are relevant, they could be developed with more sophistication to better persuade the reader. The closing 'Your faithfully' is also incorrect; it should be 'Yours faithfully'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a basic logical progression, with each paragraph addressing a specific requirement of the task. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and mechanical. Phrases like 'Apart from this' and 'I want to tell you' are somewhat repetitive and simplistic. The paragraphing is present, but the transitions between ideas feel abrupt. To reach a higher band, you should use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your sentences and ideas more fluidly, ensuring the reader can follow your train of thought without effort.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision expected at higher levels. You rely on basic terms like 'help', 'do', and 'tidy up'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'do all the cookings' (which should be 'do all the cooking') and 'starting days' (which should be 'the initial days' or 'the first few days'). To improve, focus on using more precise verbs and nouns related to household management and professional experience, and pay closer attention to standard collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are several grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'I am writting' (spelling), 'as your kids always make mess' (missing article 'a'), and 'I would not be able come' (missing 'to'). You rely mostly on simple sentence structures. While you attempt some complex sentences, they often contain errors in preposition usage or verb forms. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, and proofreading for common spelling errors like 'writting'.
