Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing great! I am writing in regards in regards to your advertisement for requesting help in your home during coming summer. I will be pleased to do so. I live near your house right across the street and feel that the commute will not bother me a lot.
To be honest, I love to help people and feel that there could not be a better investment of free time if someone is being assisted. I have done several charity works in my college times and I still go to temple and spend 3-4 hours after my work doing free service to devotees.
I would like to mention my hours of work and when I would be available. As I work a 9-5 job, I get home at around 5:30 pm and I can come to your house right after having my

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The letter fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While you addressed the prompt's requirements by suggesting help, explaining your motivation, and mentioning availability, the response is incomplete. The final paragraph is cut off mid-sentence, meaning you failed to fully explain your availability or provide a proper closing. To improve, ensure you complete all parts of the task and meet the minimum length requirement. The ideas presented are relevant, but the lack of completion prevents a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter shows a basic logical progression, with clear paragraph breaks for different topics. However, the abrupt ending disrupts the flow of the text. You used some cohesive devices like 'To be honest' and 'I would like to mention', which help guide the reader. However, the overall structure is compromised by the incomplete final sentence. To improve, ensure that each paragraph is fully developed and that the letter reaches a natural, complete conclusion. Improving the transition between your motivation and your availability would also enhance the overall coherence of the piece.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for this task, allowing you to communicate your intentions clearly. Phrases like 'investment of free time' and 'charity works' are understandable, though 'charity works' is slightly unnatural; 'charity work' would be more accurate. You have a sufficient range to express your ideas, but there is little use of less common or more sophisticated vocabulary. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and varied expressions. For example, instead of 'do so', you could use 'assist you with your household tasks'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the repetition in 'in regards in regards to' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'advertisement for requesting help'. Additionally, 'in my college times' should be 'during my college years'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are noticeable. To improve, focus on proofreading for repetitive words and ensuring that your prepositions and verb tenses are used correctly. Increasing the variety of your sentence structures will also help improve your score.
