Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing in response to your advertisement for some one to help for a few hours in a day for the upcoming summer.

I am an experienced worker who has been doing housekeeping job for last couple of years. I know all kind of household chores like cooking, cleaning-dusting vaccuming, meal preparation, laundry, gardening like watering plants and weeding etc. Also I'm experting in doing grocery shopping.

I am particulary eager to undertake this role because I enjoy helping members of my local community and providing reliable support. As I plan to pursue a career in hospitality management , so gaining pratical experience in domestic management and organzing daily tasks would be invaluable for me.

Regarding my available from Tuesday - Friday 6pm-9pm and Saturday - 5pm-9pm. On weekends I'm available whole day Starting May 1st- August 1st. If any emergencies or other priority comes will inform you well in advance.

I look forward to your update.

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined your skills, explained your motivation for the role, and provided specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a prospective employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands exactly what you are offering and when you are free. The letter follows the required structure and meets the purpose of the task effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details, such as the specific dates and times, are presented with complete clarity, as the current phrasing regarding your weekend availability is slightly confusing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different topics. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Also', 'Regarding', and 'As I plan to', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between the availability section and the closing could be smoother. Some sentences, particularly in the second paragraph, are slightly disjointed due to the list-like structure. Improving the use of linking words to connect these ideas would enhance the overall cohesion of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'housekeeping', 'hospitality management', and 'invaluable'. There are some minor errors in word formation and spelling, such as 'experting' instead of 'an expert' or 'experienced', and 'vaccuming' (spelling). Additionally, 'all kind of' should be 'all kinds of'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision in word choice and spelling. Expanding your vocabulary to include more varied collocations related to domestic work would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'If any emergencies... will inform you'. However, there are several grammatical slips throughout the text. For example, 'some one' should be 'someone', 'doing housekeeping job' requires an article ('a housekeeping job'), and 'Regarding my available' should be 'Regarding my availability'. There are also some punctuation issues, such as missing spaces after commas and inconsistent hyphenation. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
