Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Barrett,

I am writing to express my interest in offering some home assistance that you require for three hours this summer. I reside close to your location and well-familiar to the city since I have lived my entire life here. I am happy to help community members who are in need.

I am a well-organized and enthusiastic person. I could help you with cleaning your house, grocery shopping, preparing simple meals and gardening. Also, as I mentioned, I am quite familiar with the town I can assist you with shopping and running other errands.

I have recently completed my studies and I am looking for a job. By helping you in your home I could earn some money and gi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses all three bullet points: suggesting help, explaining the motivation, and stating availability. However, the letter is incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence ('gi'), and fails to meet the 150-word minimum requirement. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the conclusion and the final requirement regarding availability are not fully articulated. To improve, ensure you complete all sections of the letter and expand on your points to meet the length requirement. For example, instead of just listing tasks, explain how your specific skills would benefit Mrs Barrett.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Also' and 'as I mentioned' to link ideas. However, the abrupt ending disrupts the overall flow and coherence of the text. To reach a higher band, ensure that your paragraphs are balanced and that you use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition to this') to create a smoother transition between your ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with phrases like 'express my interest' and 'well-organized' being appropriate for a formal letter. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'well-familiar to the city' (should be 'well-acquainted with the city'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common vocabulary related to the context of domestic assistance and professional correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to express...' and 'By helping you in your home I could...'. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'well-familiar to the city' and the missing verb in 'I am quite familiar with the town I can assist you'. Punctuation is generally clear, but the incomplete sentence at the end is a significant error. Focus on proofreading to ensure subject-verb agreement and complete sentence structures.
