Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
This letter is with regards to your advertisement wherein you require a household help for some hours during the summer next year. I would like to express my interest to perform the require duties considering the background of house helper and my services were used by famous celebrities to cook the food, laundry and sometimes driving nearby shopping complexes.
As mentioned in the job description, a young person is required who has taken care of old people and is looking to stay at the property with meals included is perfectly aligned with my current situation. I have recently moved to this country and would highly appreciate if you could consider the request. I am a quick learner and if required to perform additional duties, I will not disappoint.
Lastly, I would like to mention the availability. Since the requirement mentioned is of 3 hours, I am flexible to come anytime between 9am to 6pm except the weekends. If there is an exception and my services are required on my days off, a prior intimation of 6 hours would be great.
Looking forward to your response.
Sincerely,
XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You suggested specific help (cooking, laundry, driving), explained your motivation by linking your background to the job requirements, and clearly stated your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven; for instance, the mention of 'famous celebrities' feels a bit disconnected from the context of a local household help role. To improve, ensure that all supporting details directly serve the purpose of the letter. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As mentioned in the job description' and 'Lastly', which help the flow. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the connection between the first and second paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter format.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'express my interest', 'perfectly aligned', and 'prior intimation' show a good command of formal language. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'background of house helper' (should be 'background as a house helper') and 'require duties' (should be 'required duties'). While you attempt some less common vocabulary, the word choice is occasionally slightly unnatural. Nevertheless, the meaning is always clear, and the vocabulary is adequate for the task requirements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'This letter is with regards to' (should be 'in regard to'), 'wherein you require a household help' (should be 'where you require household help'), and 'the requirement mentioned is of 3 hours' (should be 'the requirement is for 3 hours'). Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation is generally good, and the sentence variety is sufficient to maintain interest. Focusing on article usage and prepositional phrases will help improve your accuracy.
