Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to express my interest to help you regarding the household chores in the summer break for couple of hours. I come across your advertisement in one of the renowned newspaper.
I can handle all kind of house work including the cleaning utensils, floor cleaning, washing cloths and cooking all kind of recipe’s. During your busy schedules, I can also help you with the minimal grocery shopping before you reach home from the work, I believe this would definitely reduce half of your stress and anxiety towards the house work.
Currently I am pursuing second year Diploma in project management at university of Toronto. I certainly believe that, earning a few bucks from this part-time work would extremely helpful to pay my tuition fees and also to manage daily express.
I am available on weekdays from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Kindly confirm the timing of your availability.
Hoping that you will consider my interest to work at your place.
Yours faithfully,
Anjali Reddy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state how you can help (cleaning, cooking, shopping), explain your motivation (financial support for tuition), and specify your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a stranger. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the section on why you want the job could be more personal or professional. Additionally, there are minor inaccuracies in the task requirements, such as the phrase 'express my interest to help' which is slightly awkward. Overall, the response is relevant and addresses all parts of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Currently' and 'During your busy schedules', to link your thoughts. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard formal structure. To improve, ensure that sentences within paragraphs are more tightly linked to avoid a slightly disjointed feel.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'renowned', 'advertisement', and 'pursuing'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'cleaning utensils' (usually 'washing dishes'), 'washing cloths' (should be 'clothes'), and 'manage daily express' (likely meant 'daily expenses'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations related to household tasks would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I come across' (should be 'I came across'), 'all kind of house work' (should be 'all kinds of housework'), and 'recipe’s' (incorrect pluralization with an apostrophe). Additionally, 'interest to help' should be 'interest in helping'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct pluralization will improve your accuracy significantly.
