IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer.

Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I am writing to express my willingness to help your house chores during my summary vacation from June to August.

As a high school student, I am familiar with all house hold works including cleaning, vessel washing, laundry work, and grocery shopping for you. Furthermore, I am an expert in cooking; thus, if you wish, I can cook delicious Sri Lankan cushion for you. I am flexible to do some extra works based on your instructions.

Firstly, I would like to improve my English speaking skill. Therefore, I believe that spending time with you provides me an opportunity to develop my ability. Secondly, I am looking for a part-time job to earn money to pay my semester fee. Finally, I love to explore foreign countries and their culture. Hence, this is a most suitable place to gain knowledge.

I has been working as a part-time cashier in the store; thus, I am available everyday from 6:00 am to 11:00 am. Unfortunately, I am not available after lunch. However, I can work anytime on weekends.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Priya Mohan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly suggest how you can help (cleaning, cooking, etc.), explain your motivation (improving English, earning money), and detail your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, though the mention of 'Sri Lankan cushion' is a clear vocabulary error that slightly confuses the reader. Overall, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a proper closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'However' to guide the reader through your points. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. While some transitions are a bit mechanical, the overall structure is coherent and serves the purpose of the letter well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'willingness', 'flexible', and 'semester fee'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice that affect precision. For example, you wrote 'Sri Lankan cushion' instead of 'cuisine' and 'house hold works' instead of 'household chores'. Additionally, 'summary vacation' should be 'summer vacation'. These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and attention to collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I has been working' (should be 'I have been working') and 'I am available everyday' (should be 'every day'). You also have minor issues with article usage and prepositions. While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message. To reach a higher band, you should focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage.
