Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barret,

I am writing to inform you that I would like to assist you in your home next summer. I have read the advertisement that you posted in community group. My expertise is in washing dishes and sweeping floor which could be useful for you. If you require these skills, you could contact me anytime and I will share my details.

I am studying in university and the time for paying fees is coming soon. Therefore, I am looking for a work to gather some amount of money. As a result, I would be able to pay fees as soon as possible. I would appreciate it, if you will hire me.

Moreover, I am attending university from Monday to Friday and I am available on weekends. I have attached my contact information below so you could contact me through call or message.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Your sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: suggesting help, explaining the motivation, and detailing availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the ideas are somewhat underdeveloped. For instance, the suggestion of 'washing dishes and sweeping floor' is quite basic and could have been expanded to show more initiative or reliability. The explanation for wanting the work is clear, but the phrasing is slightly repetitive. Overall, the response addresses the requirements of the task effectively, though it lacks the depth of detail that would elevate it to a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'As a result' are used to link sentences and ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly misused in context. For example, 'As a result' is used to connect the need for money to the ability to pay fees, which is logical, but the overall flow could be improved with more varied linking phrases. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. Phrases like 'washing dishes', 'sweeping floor', and 'gather some amount of money' are functional but lack sophistication. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'looking for a work' (should be 'looking for work' or 'a job') and 'community group' (which lacks an article). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without difficulty, it does not demonstrate the range or precision required for a higher band. The student uses simple, everyday language throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am studying in university' (should be 'at university'), 'the time for paying fees is coming soon' (awkward phrasing), and 'I would appreciate it, if you will hire me' (incorrect conditional structure). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though the closing 'Your sincerely' is incorrect (should be 'Yours sincerely'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, which limits the score.
