Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
I am writing this letter to express my interest for helping you next summer as advertised in the NS Global newspaper.
I am a full-time student at Dalhousie University, currently enrolled for the Master of Business Administration. I will be having a summer break starting in May 2026, thus I can help you with cooking, laundry, dog walking, and grocery shopping and other things as per your requirement. I speak English, French, Punjabi, Hindi and Haryanvi so I believe you will be comfortable to communicate in English.
Being a full-time student, it is really hard for me to concentrate on work during studies and earn some money for my basic needs thus I believe that the summer break provides me opportunities to gain some work experience as well as to earn money for my next semester tuition fee. Additionally, I have been living in this city from past 4 years so I am quite aware about the surroundings to help you with services like dog walking and shopping in the city center.
I will be available to help you from May10th, 2026 for Monday to Saturday as I am keeping Sunday for investing some time in my hobbies.
I have attached my resume along with complete profile details for your kind perusal and requesting you to please consider it for this position.
Thanks in advance for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Rajwinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly outlined the services you can provide, explained your motivation for seeking the work, and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details, such as the specific start date and the nature of your availability, are presented with complete clarity to avoid any ambiguity for the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'thus' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the message effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'perusal', 'enrolled', and 'surroundings' appropriately. There are some minor errors in collocation, such as 'interest for helping' instead of 'interest in helping' and 'living in this city from past 4 years' instead of 'for the past 4 years'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Using more precise collocations would enhance the professional tone of your letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I will be having a summer break' (should be 'I will have') and 'from May10th' (missing space). Additionally, 'I am keeping Sunday for investing' is slightly awkward; 'I prefer to keep Sundays free' would be more natural. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not hinder the reader's understanding. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy would improve your score.
