Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing this to express my interest regarding the advertisement I have seen in a group chat. My name is Tom, I am 23 year old, second year Btech student at SAIT. I am thinking about doing a volenteering job in my summer break. So it will be my pleasure to help you out by anyways I could.
Let me explain in more detail, I am basically from India who loves to live with family along with I help elderly in any way I could. As I am staying alone far from my parents, being with you as well as assisting you will make me feel like being at home again. I love cooking, cleaning and arranging stuff to where it belongs.
Finally, my availibily is from Monday to Friday after 6pm, as in my day time I am thinking about doing a full time job to gather some money for my next semester. On weekends I am free all day, moreover I would love to cook some Indian delicacies for you. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours Faithfully,
Yash.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an acquaintance. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention cooking and cleaning, you could have provided more specific examples of how you would assist Mrs Barrett to better demonstrate your suitability. Additionally, there is a slight inconsistency in your stated purpose; you mention 'volunteering' in the first paragraph but then state you are looking for a full-time job during the day, which might confuse the reader regarding your commitment. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the content could be more detailed and focused.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'Finally', 'as', and 'moreover' to link your sentences. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or forced, such as 'along with I help elderly in any way I could'. The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this work', 'these tasks') is more precise. The logical progression is generally clear, but the connection between your academic studies and your availability could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'delicacies' and 'assisting'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'volenteering' (volunteering), 'availibily' (availability), and 'Btech' (B.Tech). Additionally, some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'by anyways I could' or 'arranging stuff to where it belongs'. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling. While your vocabulary is sufficient for the task, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I am 23 year old' (should be '23 years old'), 'I am basically from India who loves to live' (awkward phrasing), and 'as in my day time' (should be 'during the day'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some run-on sentences and comma splices. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency of your writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would be beneficial.
