Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
I am writing this letter in regards to give a helping hand that you are looking for next summer.
Initially, cleaning is my hobby since childhood so I always like to help people and I feel I am the best suitable option to help you figure out the things in your house. Apart from that I have some contacts which will make this work so much easier for us.
Further, I have recently help my 2 friends in cleaning their house and there are some equipment's that I have recently buy out for cleaning the house.
Moreover, I would like to mention that I am fully available throughout summer but I will not be available for 1 week from 12th August to 18th August as I will be out of the town with my family.
I hope you will prefer me over others and I will be also awaiting for your response.
Kind regards,
Raj Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state how you can help (cleaning), why you want the work (enjoyment of cleaning and helping others), and your availability, including the specific dates you will be away. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, mentioning that you have 'contacts' is vague and does not clearly explain how that helps Mrs. Barrett. To improve, ensure that your reasons and explanations are more fully elaborated to demonstrate a stronger connection to the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Initially', 'Apart from that', and 'Moreover' to transition between ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the relationship between ideas is more seamless. The paragraphing is sufficient for a short letter, but ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed theme to enhance the overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms such as 'helping hand', 'equipment', and 'available'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'figure out the things in your house' and 'buy out for cleaning'. These phrases sound unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise vocabulary and common collocations that are appropriate for a formal or semi-formal request. Avoid overly simplistic phrasing where more descriptive alternatives exist.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I have recently help' (should be 'helped'), 'equipment's' (incorrect pluralization), and 'buy out' (incorrect verb usage). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy of your writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb tense usage will significantly improve your score.
