Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barett,

I am writing to inquire about your recent adverstisement in the newspaper regarding someone to assist you for few hours for upcoming summer.

I am very excited about this opportunity and would like to tell about my education background and work related experience. I have completed personal support worker program and worked in a hotel as a Guest Attendant for three years. Currently, I am looking for a job in a home setting to get some hands on experience.

I am experienced to provide housekeeping services such as cleaning , doing laundry, cooking meals and happy to assist you in gardening. Additionaly , I can help you with shopping , medical appointements as I hold a G-license and had my personal vechicle, which I can use for work. However, I need fuel expenses to be covered in the contract. Futhermore, I am not available on weekends because of my piano classes.

Thank you for cooperation and consideration. I am hoping to hear back from you soon.

Yours faithully,

Harnoor

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined how you could help (housekeeping, cooking, driving), explained your motivation (gaining hands-on experience), and specified your availability (weekends are excluded). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on your motivation; for instance, mentioning why you are specifically interested in Mrs. Barrett's home environment would add a more personal touch and demonstrate better development of ideas. Overall, the response is purposeful and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, with clear paragraphing separating the introduction, the body of your experience and services, and the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Currently,' 'Additionally,' and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the progression between sentences is smoother. For example, the transition between your experience and your specific services is a bit abrupt. Improving the use of referencing and cohesive ties would help the text feel more cohesive and less like a list of points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, using terms like 'personal support worker,' 'housekeeping services,' and 'cooperation.' There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'adverstisement,' 'appointements,' 'vechicle,' and 'faithully.' While these do not impede communication, they do affect the overall impression. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure careful proofreading of common professional terms. Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, but a more sophisticated range would be required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'for few hours' (should be 'a few hours'), 'tell about my education background' (should be 'tell you about'), and 'had my personal vechicle' (should be 'have my own vehicle'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some spacing issues before commas. The majority of your sentences are clear, and the errors do not cause confusion for the reader. Focusing on article usage and verb tense consistency will help you achieve greater accuracy.
