Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to inform you that I have seen your advertisement, looking for someone who can assist you in your home for some hours per day.
I would be a great one in helping you in whatever you are asking for. First of all, I can take care of your family members while you are at work. Secondly, I can help you in mowing the grass around your house. Finally, I have a driver's license, therefore, I can drive your children to their schools every morning.
I would like to do this job for many reasons, firstly, I enjoy helping others. the most importantly, I need it for money, thus I can pay my university annual fees.
If you hire me to help you in your home, I will be available from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
I hope you respond to me promptly at your earliest convenience.
Best regards,
Tom Jack

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting tasks, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention mowing the grass and driving children, these points could be expanded slightly to show more enthusiasm or specific capability. The explanation for needing the money is clear, but the phrasing is a bit blunt. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' to sequence your ideas. While these are functional, they are somewhat mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between your motivation and your availability is smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'at your earliest convenience' and 'inform you' are appropriate for a formal letter. However, there are some awkward collocations, such as 'I would be a great one in helping you', which sounds unnatural. Additionally, 'the most importantly' is grammatically incorrect. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise verbs and adjectives would help you move into a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I would be a great one in helping you' and 'the most importantly, I need it for money'. The use of 'thus' is slightly misused in this context, as it usually follows a clause that leads to a logical conclusion. Punctuation is generally fine, but there are minor issues with capitalization after commas. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
