Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing to express my strong interest in a part-time position, which you advertised in The Tribiune newspaper.

There are several ways, I could help you at your residence. Firstly, I could perform small household chores which include, cleaning and dusting. Apart from this, I am good at cooking and make several types of dishes. In addition, I have a valid driving license, so I can help you in shopping, medical appointments and so on.

I would like to do this work because I have always enjoyed helping others. While performing my duties I can improve my communication skills and also learn about your culture and tradition. I could also gain the valuable experience which would be beneficial for my future goals.

Regarding my schedule, I am availbale from 9 am to 12 pm on weekdays, after that I have to attend my classes at college. Apart from that, on weekends, I am available anytime during the day. On holidays, I can work extra hours if needed.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Parminder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outline how you can assist Mrs Barrett (cleaning, cooking, driving), explain your motivation for wanting the job, and provide a detailed schedule of your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an acquaintance or potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands exactly what you are offering and when you are available. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Apart from this', 'In addition', and 'Regarding my schedule' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. The flow of information is smooth, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text. The structure is coherent and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task, such as 'residence', 'valid driving license', and 'beneficial'. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'Tribiune' (Tribune) and 'availbale' (available), but these do not impede communication. You use a variety of phrases to express your availability and skills. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions, but the current range is sufficient and accurate for the context of a formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor slips, such as the unnecessary comma in 'There are several ways, I could help you' and the slight awkwardness in 'I could also gain the valuable experience'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause any confusion for the reader. Your grammar is strong and supports clear communication throughout the letter.
