Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs. Barret,

My aim in writing this letter is as regarding your advertisement for a domestic help to assist you for chores during summer.

My name is Destiny Fowls and I'm a student of Stan Medical College and was quite happy when I saw your post online requesting help, I would be able to offer housecleaning services like dusting and vacuuming, doing laundry and putting them away where possible. I can also assist in running small errands like going to get groceries from the supermarket and putting them away. These are but a few activities I can render and I'm also available to assist in other activities as you deem fit.

I would like to apply to do this job because I've already gotten experience as a live in nanny with a former employer while doing this I have already picked up the required skills needed for this task and also it would be a good source to make extra money to save towards my summer holidays.

I would be available on week days ( Mondays - Thursdays)

around three - five pm . I won't be available on weekends because I would busy with a part time program I'm trying to conclude by winter .

I would be looking forward to hearing from you and discussing further on the contract and wages if you accept my application. I do look forward to your response.

Yours Sincerely,

Rebekah Aragba.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined the services you can provide, such as cleaning and errands, explained your motivation based on your previous experience as a nanny, and provided a clear schedule of your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands exactly what you are offering and when you are available. The response is focused and maintains a consistent purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'My aim in writing this letter is' and 'I would like to apply to do this job,' which help connect your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to transition between sentences more smoothly, as some sentences feel slightly disconnected.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'domestic help,' 'errands,' and 'contract.' There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'as regarding' instead of 'regarding' or 'render' which is slightly formal for this context. You also have a minor inconsistency in the name (Barret vs Barrett). Despite these small slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I've already gotten experience' (a bit informal), 'doing this I have already picked up' (a comma splice), and 'I would busy' (missing verb). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with capitalization and spacing after commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence boundaries will help improve your accuracy.
