Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you about my interest to help you with cooking in your house. However, I have seen an advertisement that you are looking for someone to help you in your home.
To Begin with, I am really interested to help you with cooking in your house as I have done my culinary course in last year. Moreover, it helps me in my future. However, I can make different types of cuisines like Italian , Chinese , Indian , Mexican dishes. Furthermore, I have worked in the restaurants in your town. Moreover, I will be available to work on the weekends as I am working in the cafeteria on the weekdays. Due to this reason , I can not able to come on the weekdays. I hope this information would be helpful to you. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Yours Sincerely,
Riddhi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a potential employer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention your culinary course, explaining how this specifically benefits Mrs Barrett or what tasks you are most skilled at would have strengthened the response. Additionally, the opening paragraph is slightly repetitive, as you state you are writing to inform her of your interest and then immediately mention seeing the advertisement. Focusing on a more concise introduction would improve the overall impact.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure, moving from the purpose of the letter to the specific details requested. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, the use of these connectors is sometimes mechanical and repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'Moreover'. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow of ideas would benefit from a more varied range of linking words to avoid a list-like feel.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'culinary course', 'advertisement', and 'cuisines'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'done my culinary course' (should be 'completed') and 'I can not able to' (a grammatical error that also affects lexical precision). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the flexibility or precision required for higher bands. Expanding your range to include more natural collocations related to domestic work or professional experience would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several recurring grammatical errors. For example, 'I have done my culinary course in last year' contains an unnecessary preposition, and 'I can not able to' is a double modal error. Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as unnecessary spaces before commas (e.g., 'Italian , Chinese'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of modal verbs like 'can' and 'be able to'.
