Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I recently saw an advertisement regarding a house help you are seeking at your place for some hours next summer. I would like to use my experience to help you.
I consider myself as a versatile individual who can help you in building home stuff, repairing furniture and can provide cooking services. Last summer, I joined a nearby community center where I supported hundreds of family for their daily household tasks. I would love to bring my share my previous experience to help you.
Next summer, I am moving to Georgetown, which is also my hometown to pursue my further studies in Personal Support Worker. My term has a requirement to showcase recent help I provided. As stated in the advertisement, your house is nearby to my place and it won't take it long for me to travelling. This would also help me to achieve good grades in my semester.
There are some certain days when I will not be available. To be more specifically, First week of May I won't be in the town. I am out of the town and have to travel to city as my friend is coming from Italy. So, I would be with him throughout the week, but upon my return from 2nd week of May, I will be fully available.
I am looking forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Gaurav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined the services you can provide, explained your motivation for the work, and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the connection between your studies and the work. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of availability is more concise and avoids repetitive phrasing, as the current explanation of your travel plans is slightly wordy.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To be more specifically' and 'As stated in the advertisement', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally smooth. To improve, work on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'my place', 'your house') remains clear throughout the text to avoid any ambiguity.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'versatile individual' and 'prompt response'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'building home stuff' and 'my term has a requirement'. These phrases are slightly informal or imprecise. While your meaning is always clear, increasing your use of more precise, topic-specific vocabulary would enhance your score. Focus on using more natural collocations related to household tasks and professional communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'my share my previous experience', 'it won't take it long for me to travelling', and 'To be more specifically'. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of gerunds after prepositions or verbs. Proofreading for small slips in tense and word order would significantly improve your accuracy.
