Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barett,
I hope you are doing great. I saw your advertisement regarding househelp needed for few hours a day next summer.
Firstly, I am interested in this position and I do have relevant experience in this role in the past. I would like to inform you that I have household skills like cooking, cleaning and doing groceries. I will never disappoint you if you would consider me for this position.
Furthermore, I am interested in this position because I do have a young son who will go to daycare next year so I can only work for few hours a day. This job alligns perfectly with my availability.
Finally, I want to inform you that I will be available in the mornings from 9 am to 3 pm but only on weekdays.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Amandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: suggesting help, explaining motivation, and stating availability. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the overall development of ideas. While the points are covered, they are somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your skills (e.g., specific types of cooking or cleaning) and provide more context for your motivation. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, but the brevity prevents a more thorough exploration of the requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to sequence your ideas. While these are effective, the paragraphing is a bit repetitive in structure. To improve, try to vary your transition words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. The overall structure is coherent, but the limited length makes the progression feel somewhat abrupt.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advertisement', 'relevant experience', and 'availability'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'househelp' (which is better expressed as 'household assistance') and 'doing groceries' (which should be 'doing the grocery shopping'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the sophistication or variety required for higher bands. Expanding your use of topic-specific collocations would significantly improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would like to inform you that...' and '...because I do have a young son who will go to daycare...'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'alligns' (spelling error) and 'for few hours' (missing article 'a'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are noticeable. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring subject-verb agreement. The majority of your sentences are clear, but more variety in complex structures would be beneficial.
