Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I am writing to express my interest in helping you with some household work as advertised in Global News, Halifax yesterday.

As I am a full-time student pursuing an MBA at Dalhousie University and I will be having summer break starting from September 7th, 2026. To save some money for my next semester's tuition fee and to gain some work experience that can be helpful to get my dream job as a personal support worker in future, I am currently interested to help you. I can assist you with cleaning appliances, cooking, organizing closets, and shopping some groceries. In case you have any special requirements, please let me know. I will definitely try my best to help you.

As soon as my official break starts, I will be available to work during weekdays. I would prefer taking off for Sunday to revise some modules and to prepare for my examinations; however, I can help you on Saturdays in between 10 am to 2 pm. I am flexible for my schedule if you need me for a specific period, I will be delighted to assist.

I am attaching my resume for your kind perusal. Please consider my profile for this position.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Rajwinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined how you could assist Mrs. Barrett, explained your motivation for the work, and provided specific details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an employer. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the advertisement. You have maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter, and the purpose of your communication is clear from the opening paragraph. No parts of the task were omitted, and the information provided is sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose. You have used appropriate paragraphing to separate your introduction, the details of your assistance, your availability, and the closing. Cohesive devices such as 'As I am', 'In case', and 'As soon as' are used effectively to link ideas. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. While the transition between the second and third paragraphs is clear, you could further enhance the flow by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences within paragraphs, but the current structure is already quite effective and coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task. Phrases like 'pursuing an MBA', 'kind perusal', and 'express my interest' are well-chosen and appropriate for a formal application. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede meaning. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be elevated further by incorporating more precise collocations or less common synonyms to move into the higher band range. For instance, instead of 'help you', you could use 'provide assistance' or 'support you with household management'. Overall, your lexical control is solid and meets the requirements for a high score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You show a good command of grammatical structures, using a mix of simple and complex sentences. There are some minor slips, such as 'I will be having summer break' (should be 'I will have' or 'my summer break begins') and 'shopping some groceries' (should be 'buying groceries' or 'doing the grocery shopping'). Additionally, 'I am currently interested to help you' is slightly unnatural; 'I am interested in helping you' would be more standard. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not interfere with communication. You have used punctuation correctly throughout the letter.
