Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mrs Marry,

I am writing in response to your advertisement for someone to help you at home next summer. I would be interested in taking up this opportunity and would be happy to assist you with various household tasks.

I could help you with cleaning, cooking, grocery shopping and other general household chores. I would also be able to take care of your garden. I am responsible and hardworking, so you could rely on me to complete these tasks efficiently.

I would like to do this work because I enjoy helping people and would like to gain some experience while earning some extra money during the summer. In addition, as you are an English-speaking resident, this would give me an excellent opportunity to improve my English communication skills.

I am available on weekdays from 9 A.M to 2 P.M. However, I would not be available on weekends because i have some personal commitments. Please let me know if these hours would be suitable for you.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Vishal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly outlined the household tasks you could perform, provided a logical motivation for wanting the job, and specified your availability clearly. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a prospective employer. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully covered all requirements of the prompt in a professional manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'because' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow between sentences is smooth and natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'taking up this opportunity', 'personal commitments', and 'household chores' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is generally standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations, but the current range is more than adequate for this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The grammar is generally accurate, and you have demonstrated a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. There is a minor slip with the lowercase 'i' in 'i have some personal commitments', but this does not impede communication. Your control over verb tenses and modal verbs (e.g., 'would be', 'could help') is consistent and correct.
