Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barret,
I am writing this letter because, recently I came to see your advertisement for someone to help you in your home for a few hours a day next summer. I am really interested to take this job.
I have some previous experience in helping others in moving household things. I could easily lift a weight of 40lb. Also, I know how to fix plumbing and electrical issues. Moreover, I own a lawn remover, so if you need I could bring it with me.
Furthermore, I like to help others and it is my hobby to do household works. I like to fix minor home interior problems like repairing damaged kitchen stove, changing sealing lights, and so on.
Finally, next summer I have a busy schedule but I have an availability from 15th to 20th of August and after that I will not be available. I hope you understand my situation and kindly let me know if these dates are fine for you.
Yours sincerely,
Emmanuel Paulose.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You suggested specific ways to help (lifting, plumbing, electrical work, gardening), explained your motivation (enjoyment of household tasks), and provided clear availability dates. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbor. To improve, you could expand slightly on why you are interested in the work beyond it being a hobby, perhaps mentioning a desire to be helpful to the community or gain experience. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a proper closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to transition between ideas. However, the use of these connectors is slightly mechanical and repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural rather than just listing points. The paragraphing is appropriate and helps the reader follow your message easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advertisement', 'household', and 'availability'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'lawn remover' (likely meaning 'lawnmower') and 'sealing lights' (likely meaning 'ceiling lights'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do show a lack of precision. To improve, focus on learning the correct names for common household tools and fixtures. Using more precise collocations would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I am really interested to take this job' (should be 'interested in taking') and 'I have an availability' (should be 'I am available'). Additionally, there is a punctuation error in the first sentence with an unnecessary comma after 'because'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. Increasing your control over prepositions and gerunds will help improve your accuracy.
