Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in helper role in your house. I came across this role in Times Newspaper.
Since you have recently moved here, transition might be hard like where to go for shopping, finding a nice school for the kids, setting up your kitchen, cleaning the house and preparing meals. I can do all the household chores doing laundry, gardening , babysitting.
From my childhood I love to arrange the things in a systematic way, keep my surroundings clean and trying new dishes in the kitchen. I can prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for you so that you have enough time to take care of yourself and your work life. Currently I have taken a course of hotel management, so I am not available on weekends but apart from that I can work 9-7 from Monday to Friday.
I am looking forward to hear from you.
Kind regards,
Srija

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention your interest in the role, explaining why you want to do this work could be more personal or detailed to better persuade Mrs Barrett. Additionally, the transition from your personal skills to your availability is a bit abrupt. Expanding slightly on your experience or enthusiasm would help you reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to your skills and finally your availability. Paragraphing is present, though the body of the letter could be better divided into distinct paragraphs for each requirement to improve readability. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Since' and 'so that', but the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'Regarding my availability') would improve the overall cohesion and make the text feel more natural and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'household chores', 'systematic', and 'hotel management'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'helper role in your house' (should be 'a helper role' or 'a position as a helper') and 'I have taken a course of hotel management' (should be 'I am taking a course in hotel management'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise professional vocabulary and ensure that your collocations sound natural in an English-speaking context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in Times Newspaper' should be 'in the Times Newspaper') and minor punctuation issues (e.g., spacing before commas). The phrase 'From my childhood I love to arrange' should be 'Since my childhood, I have loved arranging'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
