Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing the letter in response to the advertisement regarding a domestic helper needed for your house during the next summer.
I can provide assistance in various household duties. Firstly, the housekeeping. I can sweep and mop the floor for you including lawn moving. Besides, I can also able to wash dishes. Lastly, as a physically fit person, I can move heavy furniture and objects. I can also arrange library, kitchen utensils and other appliances.
I prefer this work just to support my tution fees of the upcoming course of Millwright. On the top of that, I will have a plenty of free time next summer looking to spend time working for something meaningful and I think this is the best opportunuty for me.
My availability is Thursdat to Sunday throughout the next summer. I will be flexible about the time either in the morning or in the evening.
Looking forward to your positive response.
Yours sincerely,
Emma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outlined your potential household contributions, explained your motivation regarding tuition fees, and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, instead of just listing tasks like 'sweep and mop', you could briefly mention your experience or efficiency in these areas to make your application more persuasive. Overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Besides', and 'Lastly' to sequence your points. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that transitions between ideas feel more natural. For example, the transition to your availability could be smoother by using a phrase like 'Regarding my availability, I am free from...'. The overall progression of ideas is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'domestic helper', 'household duties', and 'physically fit'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'arrange library' (which should be 'organize the library') and 'lawn moving' (which should be 'lawn mowing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. Expanding your vocabulary to include more specific terms related to household management would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I can also able to wash' (should be 'I am also able to wash') and 'a plenty of free time' (should be 'plenty of free time'). Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'tution' and 'opportunuty'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for small spelling mistakes.
