Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. As your neighbor, I am writing this letter to ask you about your advertisement. I saw it on Instagram and It is interesting for me. I love to help someone like you who speaks English and I would love to spend some time with you. This work is so important for me because I tend to pay a rent and right now, I do not have any job to earn money.

Moreover, I am able to help in some of household chores such as, cleaning, laundry, doing some utensils, and also I have a quality to decorate your house. I might need your suggestions but I will make sure that I can make it better than before. I have an interest in decorating home, doing household chores and etc. So, you do not need to worry about that.

Furthermore, About my availability, I am able to come on weekends as I am going to school, I can not provide time to you due to assignments.

Please reach out to me and Thanks to you for your time and support. It would be great for me to have this opportunity.

Kind regards,

Yesha Sharma.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state how you can help (cleaning, laundry, decorating), why you want the work (financial need), and your availability (weekends). The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of your decorating skills is vague, and the mention of 'doing some utensils' is unnatural phrasing. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are expanded with more specific detail and that the language used to describe your skills is more precise and natural.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas. However, some of the transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the logical flow within paragraphs could be improved. For example, the sentence 'I have an interest in decorating home, doing household chores and etc.' is repetitive and disrupts the flow. Additionally, the referencing in the final paragraph is slightly abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, but there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation. Phrases like 'doing some utensils' and 'I have a quality to decorate' are not standard English. Using 'etc.' in a formal letter is generally discouraged; it is better to finish your list or use 'and so on'. While your meaning is always clear, the vocabulary lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on learning common collocations related to household tasks and professional communication would be very beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I tend to pay a rent' (should be 'I need to pay rent'), 'I can not provide time to you' (should be 'I cannot be available'), and 'Thanks to you for your time' (should be 'Thank you for your time'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You should work on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound.
