Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to let you know that I am interested in your advertisement regarding the helper in upcoming summer for day to day chores. In next summer, I will be on my break from my college. I know some of the housework such as cleaning and cooking.

As I know that you run a small business of homemade cakes. I love to do baking. That is why, while helping you in your daily routine work, I would love to learn about some baking tips from you. Moreover, as per the advertisement you are also paying $15 per hour. It will help me to collect some money for my new phone.

But, I have a specific availability. As, I will be on break but, I have one group project with my other classmates. I will be available from 9am to 3pm and I will not be available on weekends.

Let me know, if my availability will be suitable for you.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours faithfully

Sarah

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state how you can help (cleaning, cooking, and baking), explain your motivation (learning baking tips and earning money), and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why'—for instance, expressing more enthusiasm about the specific nature of her business or your interest in the local community. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'As I know', which help the flow. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. To improve, ensure that your sentences are linked more fluidly; for example, you could use a concluding sentence in the second paragraph to bridge the gap to your availability. Paragraphing is used correctly, which aids readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advertisement', 'chores', and 'consideration'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'regarding the helper' (should be 'regarding the helper position') and 'collect some money' (a more natural collocation would be 'earn some money'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would be required for a higher band score. Focus on using more precise collocations to enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the helper in upcoming summer' (missing 'the' before 'upcoming'), 'In next summer' (should be 'Next summer'), and 'As, I will be on break but, I have' (incorrect comma usage). Additionally, 'I know some of the housework' is slightly unnatural; 'I am familiar with housework' would be better. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for articles and punctuation, particularly unnecessary commas.
