Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I write this letter with regard to the advert made known to the public. The vacancy is about the need of an assistance in your house for next summer, few hours a day.

Well, I am a good shopper. I am quite experience in home management. I would like to help in your shopping, laundry and dishes because I understand you are a busy person. In addition, I can help cater for your pets while you are away. I love pets. I have sound knowledge about companion animals.

However, I find it fascinating because I have been looking for a chance to go outside my comfort zone. I have a usual routine everyday of the week. I believe getting this job will really help my physical and mental well-being.

Furthermore, I would like to plead for your approval concerning my weekly yoga session. It is for 2 hours every Thursday's morning at the city hall. I would be back to your home afterwards. I am sure the fitness session keeps me healthy, flexible and active.

Overall, I look forward to your response and kind consideration. Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Rosemary Adibe

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined how you could help (shopping, laundry, dishes, pet care), explained your motivation for wanting the job, and specified your availability, including your yoga commitment. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, ensure your introduction is more direct; for instance, instead of 'advert made known to the public', you could state 'I am writing to express my interest in your advertisement for a home assistant'. Overall, the ideas are relevant and well-developed, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to link your thoughts. While the structure is sound, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. For example, the transition to the paragraph about your yoga session feels slightly abrupt. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'home management', 'companion animals', and 'well-being'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'advert made known to the public' (which is unnatural) and 'quite experience' (should be 'quite experienced'). To improve, try to use more precise collocations and avoid overly wordy phrases. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions would help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I am a good shopper' (a bit simplistic), 'I have a usual routine everyday' (should be 'every day'), and 'Thursday's morning' (should be 'Thursday morning'). Additionally, 'I write this letter' should be 'I am writing this letter' to reflect the ongoing nature of the action. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
