Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. My name is Malhar Bhavsar and I am a student at York University. I recently saw your advertisement on Facebook and I am interested for the helper position for next summer.
I am currently helping Mrs Warner till winter for her household chores to support my tuition fees. She is going for vacation for whole summer and I am open to work for you during that period. Also I live in just five minutes walking distance from your house.
Furthermore, I have experience in gardening and cleaning roofs which are outdoor tasks. For the indoor task, I have experience in chopping vegetables, laundry and deep cleaning of house including bathrooms.
Also, I will be having few classes in summer during 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. so I will be available between 11:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. I hope you will be okay with that.
Given my experience, availability and easy commute I am hoping that I will get a positive response from your side soon.
Yours faithfully,
Malhar Bhavsar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly outlined your potential tasks, such as gardening and indoor cleaning, and provided a logical reason for wanting the work. Your availability is also clearly stated. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on why you are particularly suited for this role beyond just listing chores, perhaps by mentioning your reliability or attention to detail, which would further develop your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'Also' to link ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. To improve, you could use more varied linking phrases to connect your experience to your availability, ensuring a smoother flow between the different sections of your letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'household chores', 'tuition fees', and 'commute'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'interested for the helper position' (should be 'interested in the helper position') and 'deep cleaning of house' (should be 'deep cleaning of the house'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated descriptive language would elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'She is going for vacation for whole summer' (missing articles) and 'I will be available between 11:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.' (the preposition 'between' should be followed by 'and'). Additionally, 'I will be having few classes' should be 'I will have a few classes'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on article usage and correct prepositional phrases will improve your accuracy.
