Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
I have just seen the advertisement that was published to help you with your house, and I would really like to help you out if possible. There are multiple chores, such as deep cleaning the house, organizing, and taking the trash out. Also, I am exceptional at cooking, so I can also meal prep for you.
Although I know this is unpaid volunteer work, I am still deeply interested in helping you. Also, I am participating in my community work at college, so this way I will be able to do some practical work.
While I am mostly available on weekdays, I will not be able to do any work on weekends. So, during regular weekdays, I can join you at any time between 9 AM and 7 PM. I am really looking forward to this opportunity.
If everything works for you, we can agree on the timings. Please reach out to me via the contact number I've attached.
Yours sincerely,
PP

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly suggested specific household tasks, explained your motivation for helping, and provided a clear schedule for your availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a local resident, maintaining a polite and helpful register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands exactly what you are offering and why. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task successfully.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Also', and 'While' to link your sentences and ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the transition between the introduction, body, and conclusion is smooth. The overall structure is coherent and supports the purpose of your communication well.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'deep cleaning', 'meal prep', and 'practical work' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it stays within a relatively standard range. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to describe your skills or your enthusiasm for the opportunity. However, your word choice is precise and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good control of grammatical structures, using a mix of simple and complex sentences. For instance, the use of subordinate clauses in 'Although I know this is unpaid volunteer work, I am still deeply interested...' shows good syntactic control. There are very few errors, and those present do not affect the clarity of your message. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence construction is varied enough to maintain the reader's interest. The grammar is consistent and reliable throughout the text.
