Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing in response to your advertisement seeking for someone to help you next summer in household works. I am interested in the position.

I could help you in carrying out all household chores such as cooking, cleaning and washing. Moreover, I hold a valid driver's license with a clean abstract, so I can take you for shopping and doctor's appointments. In addition to it, you don't need to worry about pets if you have any, since I love pets, so I can take them out for a walk and carry-out their business.

I have been pursuing my higher education in old age care aid, so this job would help me gain practical experience in the field and can be used for the future opportunities. Furthermore, the money that I can earn from the job could be used for my next year college fees.

I am available to work six days a week from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. I always prefer to take a day off usually on Sunday to spend time with my family and friends. I would appreciate it if could excuse me every Sunday. Please let me know if whether the availability works for you or not. If not, I will change accordingly.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

PJ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined the types of assistance you can provide, such as household chores and driving. You also provided a logical reason for wanting the job, linking it to your studies in old age care. Finally, your availability is clearly stated, including your preference for Sundays off. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more nuanced; for example, you could elaborate on how your specific skills in old age care would be particularly beneficial to Mrs Barrett's specific needs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition to it', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. The progression of information is logical, moving from the services offered to the motivation for the work, and finally to scheduling. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct topics. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further, as some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and ensure that referencing remains precise throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal letter, such as 'advertisement', 'household chores', 'practical experience', and 'prompt response'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'seeking for' (the verb 'seek' does not take 'for' in this context) and 'clean abstract' (which is not standard terminology for a driving record). However, these errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding redundant phrasing like 'carry-out their business' when referring to pets.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'seeking for' and 'let me know if whether', which is redundant. Additionally, 'can be used for the future opportunities' is slightly awkward; 'could be used for future opportunities' would be more natural. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. Your control over punctuation and sentence boundaries is generally good, and your meaning is always conveyed clearly to the reader.
