Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs. Barret,
I am Lydia a 27 year old, I saw your advert on how you are looking for someone to help you in your house and I am interested in the position as helping you in your house.
I can help in in different ways in terms of cleaning, cooking, laundry going to the shop for groceries and many more.
Actually, I have completed my studies for my first program and I am for the summer break, I wouldn't be doing any job through out my break so I would like to use this opportunity to do something beneficial rather than staying at home doing nothing.
I will be available during the weekdays, thus Monday to Friday which i could help with most house chores but Saturdays and Sundays which is the weekends, I can take off days to rest and do other personal things before I resume .
I hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you
Lydia Elorm Deku

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a potential employer. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you list chores like 'cleaning' and 'cooking', expanding slightly on your experience or reliability would have made the response more persuasive. Additionally, the explanation of your availability is clear, but the phrasing is slightly repetitive. To improve, ensure that each point is not just mentioned but elaborated upon to fully satisfy the requirements of a formal letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to your skills, motivation, and availability. Paragraphing is present, though the indentation is inconsistent and the spacing between paragraphs is somewhat erratic. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Actually' and 'thus', but the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the connection between the ideas in the third paragraph could be improved with more varied linking words. Overall, the message is easy to follow, but the structure lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use functional phrases like 'beneficial' and 'opportunity', which are appropriate. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'help in different ways' and 'doing nothing'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'I am for the summer break' (which should be 'I am on summer break'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to household tasks or professional availability.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'I am Lydia a 27 year old' lacks proper punctuation, and 'I am for the summer break' is awkward. There are also issues with run-on sentences and inconsistent use of articles and prepositions (e.g., 'help in in different ways'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with commas and capitalization. To improve, focus on sentence boundaries and ensure that your verb tenses and prepositions are used accurately in a formal context.
