Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope this letter finds you in great health and high spirits. I am writing to express my concern regarding the advertisement for someone to help you with your household chores next summer.

I am the right person to suit your requirements to provide support with your daily tasks. I have 10 years of well-versed experience working as a housekeeper. I can do all the home routines, including cleaning, doing laundry, cooking and other tasks as well, to keep your home fully maintained.

However, due to a busy work schedule, I will be available on weekdays from 9 am to 2 pm

. On weekends, I spend time with my family, due to which I can't work. I hope my availability and experience match your requirements.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Warm wishes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: suggesting help, explaining the motivation, and detailing availability. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. The explanation of why you would like to do this work is missing entirely; you only state that you are the 'right person' for the job. To improve, you must expand on your personal motivation for seeking this specific role. Because the response is under-length and lacks a key requirement (the 'why'), it falls into the lower band range.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used, though the paragraphs are quite short due to the limited word count. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'However' and 'including', which help link ideas. To reach a higher band, you should use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences feels more natural and less mechanical. The current flow is functional but lacks the sophisticated transitions expected at higher levels.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for a letter of this nature. Phrases like 'well-versed experience' and 'fully maintained' are clear, though 'well-versed' is slightly misused in this context. You have a sufficient range to convey your message, but there is a lack of less common or more precise vocabulary that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. To improve, try to incorporate more specific collocations related to household management or professional service.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The grammar is generally accurate, and your meaning is always clear. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'I am writing to express my concern regarding...' and 'However, due to a busy work schedule, I will be available...'. There are no major errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to include a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'If you were to hire me, I would...') or passive voice constructions, while maintaining your current level of accuracy.
