Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ma,

I am writing this letter to make my interest known concerning the advert published in the Punch newspaper on Tuesday that you need an assistant at your house for three hours per day in the coming summer.

In all honesty, I want to use this medium to let you know I enjoy doing house chores, that my hobbies I must confess. I like tidying up the house because I am more comfortable in a neat environment. Also, I like cooking and doing any kind of washing.

Moreover, the reason why I want this work is that I want to raise some fund, because I am planning to go for my degree next year. It will be a part-time program, be rest assured it will not affect my work at your home.

The course would be a weekend studies. I would always be available on weekdays but four hours on Saturdays and Sunday will be for the intending program which will be from 4pm to 8pm on the weekends.

Thanks, as I look forward to favorable response.

Yours faithfully,

Ridey.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly stated how you could help (tidying, cooking, washing), explained your motivation (raising funds for your degree), and provided a clear schedule of your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the salutation 'Dear Ma' is slightly informal for a professional context; 'Dear Mrs Barrett' would have been more suitable. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your intentions and constraints clearly. The response is focused and meets the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Also' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the third and fourth paragraphs is slightly abrupt, and some of the phrasing, such as 'I want to use this medium', is a bit mechanical. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter flows well from the introduction to the conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use relevant terms like 'assistant', 'environment', and 'intending program'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'make my interest known' instead of 'express my interest' and 'raise some fund' instead of 'raise some funds'. While these do not impede communication, they limit the score. To reach a higher band, try to use more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'that my hobbies I must confess' (word order) and 'The course would be a weekend studies' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, the sentence 'be rest assured it will not affect my work' is missing a subject. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the punctuation is generally functional. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct syntax. The errors are noticeable but do not cause significant difficulty for the reader.
