Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing regarding the advertisment you posted regarding the need of helping hand for upcoming summer in your home for couple of hours, and i would like to help you for next summer in your home.

To begin with, i would like to explain that i am studying interior designer so, i think i would be able to help you in better way. Also, i have a lot of advanced tools which can be used in home.

Furthermore, next summer i will be free as that time will be offical break from my university. So, i would like to utilize that time by helping people in their home stuff so that i can learn more about my studies.

However, i will able to come fours hours each day as i have other contracts too. Also, i would be not able to work on Sunday too, the reason for this would like to spend time with my family too. I would be most grateful if you could give this opportunity to me

Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: suggesting how to help, explaining the motivation, and detailing availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a stranger. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion of being an 'interior designer' student is a good start, but the explanation of how this translates into 'helping in her home' remains vague. The availability section is clear, though the phrasing regarding the 'contracts' is slightly ambiguous. Overall, the response addresses the task requirements effectively, but could benefit from more specific examples of the tasks you are willing to perform to better persuade the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on one of the bullet points, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'However' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'helping people in their home stuff', which is a bit informal and imprecise. Overall, the structure is sound and supports the message effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. You use some relevant terms like 'advertisement', 'utilize', and 'opportunity'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'need of helping hand' (should be 'a helping hand') and 'home stuff' (which is too informal). The phrase 'studying interior designer' is also incorrect; it should be 'studying interior design'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding informal phrasing in a formal letter context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'i am studying interior designer', 'i will able to', and 'i would be not able to'. Additionally, there are consistent issues with capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I') and article usage (e.g., 'for couple of hours'). While these errors do not impede the overall meaning, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
