Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing this letter to show my strong interest in working at your home as I saw your advertisement in the newspaper that you're looking for someone to help you with household chores.
I am a good cook, polite, hardworking and someone who loves to help others in one way or another. Additionally, I am very good at housekeeping duties. I also have experience in working as home support worker for 6 months.
As my college is off for the summer I will be available to work for you every evening Monday to Friday. Also, if you need help on weekends to I can arrange to be free for you if you request it at least a week in advance.
Please let me know if that works for you and feel free to call me on given number for any further query, I will be very delighted to answer your any questions.
Kind regards
Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly suggest how you can help (cooking and housekeeping), explain your motivation (being hardworking and having previous experience), and specify your availability (evenings during the week and weekends upon request). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your qualifications and availability. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail about the specific types of household chores you are comfortable with, which would further demonstrate your suitability for the role.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from your interest in the job to your skills, then to your availability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Also', and 'As my college is off', which help the flow of the text. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is sufficient, and the letter follows a standard, clear structure that makes it easy for the reader to follow your points.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'household chores', 'housekeeping duties', and 'support worker'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor issues, such as 'answer your any questions' which is slightly awkward phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated vocabulary to describe your work ethic or experience. Overall, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your message clearly without any misunderstanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the majority of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'I also have experience in working as home support worker' (missing an article 'a') and 'call me on given number' (missing 'the'). Additionally, the sentence 'Also, if you need help on weekends to I can arrange' contains a typo ('to' instead of 'too'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammar is generally functional. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for minor articles would help improve this score.
