Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope that you're in the pink of health! I'm writing this letter to express my interest in the short-term work opportunity that you have advertised. I am confident that I would be a great fit to this position as I can assist you with major household chores such as cooking, laundry, grocery shopping, lawn mowing, and so on. Being a physically-fit person, I can easily lift and move heavy objects. So, I can help you to do deep cleaning at your house occasionally by rearranging heavy furniture.

As I want to improve my communication skills, spending time in your home would be quite helpful for me as I will be interacting with you and your family members in English language. Moreover, not only will I be earning additional income, but also be utilising my leisure time productively.

Since I am working part-time at a call centre, unfortunately, I would not be available from 7 am to 3 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, I am willing to work on weekends or evenings as needed.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Your sincerely,

Jashan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outline the household tasks you can assist with, explain your motivation for wanting the job, and provide specific details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an employer. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the task. There are no omissions, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. The response is well-structured and meets all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Since', and 'However' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from your skills to your motivation and finally to your availability. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics. The flow of the letter is natural, and the relationship between sentences is clear throughout the text, making it easy for the reader to follow your points.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'short-term work opportunity', 'utilising my leisure time', and 'physically-fit'. While the phrase 'in the pink of health' is an idiom, it is slightly informal and perhaps a bit clichéd for a professional letter. However, the overall word choice is precise and appropriate for the context. You avoid repetition and use a variety of terms to describe your skills and availability. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the use of 'not only... but also' demonstrates a good grasp of complex grammar. Most sentences are error-free, though there is a minor error in the closing: 'Your sincerely' should be 'Yours sincerely'. Additionally, 'fit to this position' is slightly unnatural; 'fit for this position' would be more accurate. Despite these minor slips, your control over grammar and punctuation is strong, and the meaning is always clear. The majority of your sentences are accurate.
