Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to express my interest to work as a housekeeper during next summer. I read your advertisement published in the local newspaper where it is mentioned that you need a housekeeper for 4 hours a day next summer.
I could help you by doing the laundry, cleaning the house and picking up groceries. If you need to go to outside from home, I can drive your car. Moreover, I can help you with small electrical repair works.
Since I am a student, I will have a 30 days vacation during summer. I want to work so that I will not be bored by sitting in my house also I will be able to earn some pocket money.
However. I will be only available from April 01 to April 25. Though the summer vacation will end on 30 April, I will go to visit my cousin on 26th. I am flexible with the working hours.
I have attached my ID card copy with this letter. You can ring my phone for further quarries.
Your faithfully
Jamil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention helping with laundry and groceries, expanding slightly on your experience or reliability would have made the response more persuasive. The information regarding your availability is clear, although the contradiction between 'next summer' and the specific dates in April (which is spring) is slightly confusing. Overall, the task is fully addressed, but the content could be more detailed to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Since', and 'However' to link ideas. However, the transition 'However. I will be only available' contains a punctuation error (a full stop instead of a comma), which disrupts the flow. Additionally, some sentences feel a bit disconnected. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring punctuation is accurate would enhance the overall cohesion of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'housekeeper', 'advertisement', and 'flexible'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'go to outside from home' (should be 'go out') and 'quarries' (should be 'queries'). These errors do not impede communication, but they show a lack of precision. To improve, try to use more sophisticated collocations related to household tasks or professional communication. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to express my interest...' and 'I want to work so that I will not be bored...'. There are several grammatical errors, including 'interest to work' (should be 'interest in working'), 'a 30 days vacation' (should be 'a 30-day vacation'), and 'Your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede your ability to communicate your message. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and consistent control over complex sentence structures.
